What is GAIAM?
GAIAM, Inc. is a leading company dedicated to the practice and lifestyle related to yoga, fitness and wellness products and content. This company is dedicated to making yoga, fitness and wellness accessible to all. However, these spiritual topics are not only thought for the people’s body and mind, the company has also a big commitment to the environment in every work they do.
Gaiam launched the world’s first carbon-neutral product shipping program in 2006. Partnering with The Conservation Fund, the company created its Go ZeroSM program to involve its great number of customers in climate-change action and raised awareness about the impact of carbon dioxide emissions.
Gaiam sources its 30% post-consumer waste paper from a sustainable forest managed by the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). PEFC is an organization known for being the world’s largest nongovernmental organization, which promotes sustainably managed forests. Like FSC, PEFC ensures the GAIAM team using the highest-quality paper at the lowest possible environmental cost. Their catalogs are 100% recyclable anywhere magazines are accepted for recycling. By using nonvirgin fibers in their catalogs, the company saved nearly 50,000 trees and 9 million pounds of greenhouse gases.
GAIAM uses 100% recyclable and biodegradable eco-conscious packaging for all media. Designed to make the smallest environmental footprint possible, the lightweight, tough and resilient packaging is made from 100% post-consumer waste and is printed with soy-based ink.
GAIAM is committed to zero-waste standards at their corporate office, adding composting collection to an already robust recycling program that includes materials not collected in most businesses. GAIAM reuses shipping containers and use biodegradable packing at their distribution center, and provide opportunity for employees to join off-site stream cleanups and Habitat for Humanity projects.
The company is a major supporter of the nonprofit Solar Living Institute, a green living and renewable energy learning mecca that hosts 200,000 visitors a year. In 2006, GAIAM sponsored an SLI Earth Day for Kids field trip for 50 inner-city fifth graders, and in 2007, the company sponsored approximately 250 students.
