In the past few days, the world witnessed an unprecedented act in the history of the Catholic Church, as 34 Chilean bishops gave up their positions, putting them in the hands of Pope Francis, due to Bishop Juan Barros, accused of covering up acts of sexual abuse against minors.
“WE HAVE PLACED OUR POSITIONS IN THE HANDS OF THE HOLY FATHER AND SHALL LET HIM FREELY DECIDE FOR EACH OF US”, THE BISHOPS ANNOUNCED IN A PRESS CONFERENCE HELD AT THE VATICAN.
During a press conference, the bishops used the opportunity to apologize to the Chilean people, to the abuse victims and to the Pope himself for the scandalous, denigrating situation the Catholic Church is now facing.
The Holy Father has not yet commented on the situation, so it is unknown whether he accepted the Bishops’ resignation or not.
On the other hand, a meeting with the Holy Father was held at the Vatican City in order to address the errors and omissions made during the management of sex abuse cases involving Bishop Juan Barros and the man accused of covering up his crimes, Fernando Karadima.
However, Juan Carlos Cruz, the Chilean man claiming to have been sexually abused by priest Fernando Karadima, has made clear his disappointment with the Vatican’s reaction, as well as its maximum representative, Pope Francis.
“I THINK THAT, UNFORTUNATELY, THE POPE IS LYING.”
The case will remain open until the Holy Father addresses the situation. Currently, he has only spoken about it once, when he said:
“THE DAY THEY BRING ME PROOF AGAINST THE BISHOP – THEN, I WILL SPEAK.”
